Racing Provides Quality Time for Jason and Brendan Blascyk

Even though Jason Blascyk has been behind the wheel of his own race car for more than two decades, there is something that makes him even a bit nervous at the track — that is watching his son, Brendan, out on the track racing.

“It’s fun. I get excited watching him,” said Blascyk, a resident of Kensington, Minn. “I get more nervous watching him than if I’m out in the car.”

You’ll often see the father-son team at I-94 Speedway and Viking Speedway in Alexandria weekly. Jason drives the No. 1B Wissota Modified. Brendan races the No. 9B Wissota Midwest Modified.

Jason Blascyk’s interest in racing started when his father took him to races at Viking Speedway and at Herman. Jason got behind the wheel himself and soon, his son was becoming hooked on the sport.

“I’ve always been in the garage with him as a kid, and just grew up around it,” Brendan said.

Jason Blascyk, 48, has raced for 21 years. After one year in the pure stocks he moved into the super stock class for 10 years and has been in the modifieds for the past 10. The modified class at Viking and I-94 is as strong as there is in Wissota.

“It’s really tough. When you think you’ve got something (set-up wise), half the other guys have already had that and they’ve moved on to something else,” Jason said.

Brendan Blascyk, 27, also from Kensington, raced for four years before taking some time off to go to school. Late in 2017, he bought a B-mod and got back into racing.

Brendan Blascyk has had a good season. He finished fifth in the points at I-94 Speedway at a track that regularly attracted more than 30 midwest modified weekly. He had three top five finishes at the track. Blascyk also has a win and a runner-up finish at Viking Speedway in Alexandria.

“We just changed a lot of stuff,” Brendan said of having success in 2018.

Jason Blascyk’s number choice was simple — the No. 1 was easy to read and allowed for more sponsors on the car. The paint scheme, however is more unique — it has a Viking theme.

“I wanted to do something different,” Jason said. “I like the heritage of the Vikings and the Runestone; Kensington is where the Runestone was discovered. It’s kind of a tribute.”

While the two have spent many hours in the garage working on their cars, they do enjoy their time at the racetrack too

“Every night we’re pretty much at the same track,” Brendan said.
